The spraying of the washing liquid causes the droplets of washing liquid to become smaller, resulting in an increase in the surface area of each droplet. This surface is also the contact surface between the pollutant from the gas stream and the washing liquid, where absorption, i.e. the binding of the pollutant from the gas stream to the washing liquid, takes place. This increased contact area thus allows for more efficient absorption of the pollutant.   <\/p>\n<p>Since the rising gas stream can carry droplets of contaminated washer fluid, droplet separators are located in the exhaust air scrubber.
